Situated in an impressive building that was the former 16th century Municipal Prison, the Centro Português de Fotografia (Portuguese Photography Centre) was set up in 1997 under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, in order to bring a new lease of life to photography, at a time when more photography schools and festivals were emerging.
This venue has a balanced programme ranging from contemporary to historic and both Portuguese and international photography. You can find out about the rise of photography and various individual and collective experiences that were milestones in the photography world at both a national and international level.
It has an annual programme of temporary exhibitions and a permanent museum centre, with a rare collection of old cameras. Centro Português de Fotografia is also home to a specialised library and there is also a shop and a service providing guided tours of the building and the exhibitions.
