The best-known beach for surfing in Porto is Praia Internacional do Porto, which is close to Parque da Cidade. It is very close to the built-up area of the city and popular among surf schools and all those who enjoy outdoor sports.
It is here on this beach that the Porto round of the Circuito de Surf do Norte (Northern Surf Circuit) usually takes place, an event comprised of five rounds, each of them in a different city (Viana do Castelo, Porto, Espinho, Aveiro and Figueira da Foz).
Praia Internacional is also the venue for the Sumol Porto Pro (a trophy that is part of the MOCHE league, which is the main Portuguese surf competition and defines the Portuguese male and female champions). Other events are also held here such as the Rip Curl GromSearch and Campeonato Nacional de Surf Esperanças (Portuguese Junior Surf Championship).
For enthusiasts, Porto has many other beaches that are good for surfing, such as Matosinhos, Leça da Palmeira, Praia do Aterro and Praia da Azurara.
There are also a number of surf schools in Porto, in Matosinhos, for example. If you're thinking about learning, don't be shy. A surf school will give you the basic notions and then you'll soon quickly develop your skills!
