The Parque de Serralves (Serralves Park) cradles a contemporary art museum, the Fundação Serralves (Serralves Museum) near the park’s entrance. The museum exhibits ‘cutting-edge’ works by modern artists, with installations constantly being changed. There are no permanent exhibitions on display.
The Parque de Serralves is home to an assortment of plants and trees, plus a small lake, which you’ll find rolling down the steep incline of this lush reserve. You’ll also come across a large field, a small farm and a rose garden complete with square hedges. You can easily spend a day wandering around this 18-hectare park.
Carlos Alberto Cabral began working on the park and the pink Serralves House (an Art Deco abode) in the 1930s. The Fundação Serralves is west of the centre on Rua de João de Castro, just south of Avenida da Boavista. Come springtime, the museum holds the Serralves em Festa, a festival with 40 hours of non-stop activities. Admission is free on Sunday, but you’ll still have to ask for a ticket to get into the gardens and the museum.
