Matosinhos is not actually in Porto. It’s a fishing town north of the Castelo do Queijo. It’s worth mentioning because Matosinhos offers a pleasant promenade next to the beach and it’s a fantastic spot for some fresh fish straight off fishing boats right to the grill.

The town is accessible by bus or light rail from Porto’s centre. A small park separates the beach and the main drag where the fish restaurants are. At the southern end of the promenade there’s a gigantic red net. Janet Echelman designed the sculpture. It’s strung across a roundabout so that it can cast about in the Atlantic winds. The net is rather fetching when it’s lit up at night. If you’re after good seafood or stroll on the beach, Matosinhos is for you.
