This square, which is commonly known as São Bento, as it is close to the railway station with the same name, pays homage to a great writer from Porto, Almeida Garrett (1799-1854).

The last major works carried out on this square were in 2005, when the Porto Metro was built, with a line that passes with a station there.

There are various streets leading off the square. You can admire the tall, narrow buildings with the typical Porto-style granite balconies.
