Situated in Cedofeita, this square has a garden, Jardim Teófilo Braga, with various sculptures for you to admire.
In the beginning, this square was given the name Praça de Santo Ovídio (Saint Ovidius Square), because there was a chapel nearby in honour of Saint Benedict and Saint Ovidius. Various political and military incidents have taken place in this square. Following the military uprising of 1st May 1851, it was called Campo da Regeneração (Field of Regeneration). However, once the Republic was proclaimed in Portugal, in 1910, it was given the name of Praça da República, after its importance in the uprising of 31st January 1891.
In the neighbourhood you'll find some well-preserved mansions, as well as typical Porto-style tall and narrow houses, made of granite.
