The name of this square is a tribute to D. João I, the tenth king of Portugal who married in this city with Philippa de Lencastre, in 1387.

Situated in Porto’s downtown area, close to Teatro Rivoli, this square was completely re-designed in 2011 and was given a car park with space for over 450 vehicles.

This square is also very close to the bustling Rua da Santa Catarina, which is a street with a huge choice of shops and restaurants.
